Lecture 14: Singleton and Plotkin Bounds

In today’s lecture we first proved the Singleton bound. (This material is from Sec. 3 in Lecture 11 from Fall 07.) We then saw the statement of the Plotkin bound and a corollary which implied the following upper bound

R\le 1-\left(\frac{q}{q-1}\right)\cdot\delta+o(1).

Unfortunately, I ran out of time to properly finish the proof of the Corollary. I will not cover this proof again, so for the details see Lecture 16 from Fall 07.

Next lecture, we will see the proof of the Plotkin bound.
