Lecture 1: Introduction

In today’s class, we went over the main points of the syllabus and the a very broad outline of the course. The slides from today’s lecture are now online.

Thanks to everyone who filled in the feedback form. All but one of you choose the 3 homework option, so we will have three short homeworks.

As I mentioned in class today, in this course we will be primarily concerned with the following goal:

Correct as many errors as possible while using the least amount of redundancy possible.

Next lecture, we will start formalizing the questions above (it’ll take us more than one lecture to arrive at a good formulation). I’ll need a proof reader for Wednesday lecture, so please volunteer!
