Lecture 1: Introduction

In today’s lecture, we mostly went through administrative stuff for the course. We briefly looked at the parity and repetition codes.

The slides that I used today have been uploaded. (I will post a smaller file soon PDF).

The syllabus and the feedback form that were handed out today are also online.

Update (Aug 28) I have uploaded my scribed notes for the lecture. Since some of you have not used LaTeX before, I have also uploaded the TeX and bib files, which you can use to familiarize yourself with LaTeX (you should not have to use anything fancier than what is there in this TeX file when you are doing the scribing).

If you want a high level overview of things we will cover in this course, you can read the book chapter (single spaced version) that I have written for the 2nd edition of the CRC Handbook on Algorithms and Theory of Computation. Any comments on the writeup are welcome.
